I Am Art

I Am Art

Abby Toviah

Pencil, 2023

I Am Art is a self-portrait in the medium of pencil. I lived in many places in my 14 years of being alive, but I was born in Arizona Phoenix, and have three siblings. I have an older sister who is a Sophomore at University. I also have an older brother who is a Junior in high school. I’m a freshman in high school with my brother, and I have a little sister in middle school. I started drawing when I was really young, but I started to think I could do this as a job in 3rd grade. I was a newbie and didn’t want to learn how to get better, but I started to watch Anime when I was in 6th and understood my art wasn’t where I wanted it to be. So I began to watch YouTube videos to help me understand and improve my art even more. I slowly drift away from being exactly like the anime shows I watch and trying to make more my own. Anime is still visible in my art style. My goal is to learn to use colors better to make my drawings more interesting.

Peace

Abigail Toviah

Color Pencil, 2023

Peace is a still-life art piece that I made with colored pencils. I used many colors to make this, it was time comusoning but I enjoyed it. You can take this art any way you want but when I made the art I made it I took it as peace and humanity. I took this art piece like this because two different candies are different, but are the same in some way. They both have rainbows on them but they are shaped differently and they are together. I chose a gummy worm because they are my favorite gummy, I like the sour ones better but it would have many of the same textures. The gummy worm was made in 1981 on July 15 by Trolli who is German. He made gummy worms to make parents uncomfortable with a simple thing like candy. Now gummy worms are the fourth most popular non-chocolate candy. My other candy is Sour Dudes Belts. They were made in 1985 by World Confections, Inc.

So Sleepy

Abigail Toviah

Watercolor, 2024

So Sleepy is a painting I made with watercolor that is my dream. I didn’t make one of my dreams because mine are either boring to paint like school or disturbing like me dying in horrific ways and it isn’t my painting style. So I made a surrealist painting that could be taken as a dream. Since it’s odd and probably can’t exist. I wanted to represent the shy side of me. The side of me that can’t speak loud and keeps to herself. I show my mouth to show that I want to speak and share my ideas. The sleeping girl is like my inner person who is quite down almost like it’s sleeping when I meet new people. The lion is usually represented as a strong and brave animal through stories. I made my lion sleep in the paint to represent the strong ideas and ambition I want to share but am too shy to. I added the wings and antennas to the lion to make it still seem like a dream and that my ideas might be a little more weird than other people's. The clock is like the ticking social battery I have with people when it rings my social battery is out and I can’t be social anymore. That’s what the painting means to mean, but since it’s art it can mean something different from people.

My World

Abigail Toviah

Digital Art

2024

My final project, My World, is supposed to show my talents, so I chose digital art because I know how to use it and I am good at it. I find digital art easy because when I make a mistake I can fix it easily with the many tools in the app. When I start using digital things just make sense like I’m in the zone. I find it fun to be so focused on an art project, time passes and when you get back into reality you can see how far you went. You may be wondering why my project name is My World when it’s fictional and unrealistic. I used to have a wild imagination when I was younger, I would make silly little characters who looked odd and weird. I used those characters in this project because even though I am older I still like to look back at my old characters. Except I added a little easter egg of my favorite show, Dimple or Ekubo either way you call him, from Mob Pyscho 10. In shorter terms, you can say it was my world.

The Big Three

Abigail Toviah

Charcoal

2024

I used charcoal for my piece Rose and Tiggy. It was my first time using charcoal, it was a great learning experience I learned a lot. I learned to take my time while making the textures on my stuffed animal.  It was challenging because I work fast for many of my projects so when I had to go slower, it was difficult, though it was also calming. I decided to use the dog, tiger, and shirt because they were part of my childhood and have been with me for a long time. The first one I owned was the dog, Rose, she was my older sister who had owned it before me. She got it when she was in first or second grade it was a gift from her class because we were moving. As soon as she grew she gave me the dog and I named it Rose. I liked the name Rose at the time so I decided to name her that. I still have Rose on my bed, and I often sleep with her. I then got the tiger, Tiggy, when I was five years old. Tiggy is his name because he is a tiger, at the time I thought it was a unique name and very creative. I got him at a Convenience store because I saw it as a cat and asked my mom if I could have it. Now he is one of my oldest stuffed animals including Rose. The shirt is the youngest out of all of the objects, I got it when I was in third grade. It was a shirt for a spring play for my grade, I Need a Vacation. It was a play about things you do during the summer. It was also the play I remember the most, not the play per se, but the working for the play date. I remember the teacher getting mad at my class for not being quiet. It was the maddest I had ever seen I teacher threw the music stand I was behind the stand so I didn’t see it but I for sure heard it. It was a huge mess the floor was dented and many of the kids started crying. The vice principal had to come in to calm us down. For some reason he was fired he took a break for the rest of the year after the play was out to the public. The other thing about the shirt is how it grew on me, literally. In 3rd grade it was down to my knees, now it’s a normal shirt.

Come Back to Gusu With Me

Abby Toviah

Watercolor

2024

Come Back to Gusu With Me is a watercolor piece with the perspective of a building. I chose this building called the Cloud Recces because it is from a show based on a novel that I like that takes place in a fantasy version of ancient China. The Cloud Recces is a place of learning of a group of family with servants and knights. This place is home to the supporting character to the protagonist. I find the architecture unique and beautiful. The landscape of the trees and mountains are beautiful to me and I enjoyed making it.

Earth at His Feet

Abigail Toviah,

Digital Art, 2025

This digital art piece, The Earth at His Feet, has taken inspiration from my favorite show, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. Which is about a high school student going through life as an extremely powerful psychic closer to being a god than a normal human. Though that is what he wants, Kusuo Saiki, the main character, wants to be a normal teenager. He tries everything to get little to no attention from people around him, which is hard because the weirdest/most attention-seeking people, somehow, are drawn to him. He acts like he hates them and wants them to leave him alone, but he has gone out of his way to keep them safe and happy. He has changed the world for his friends and himself many times, making him seem like a god. I wanted to represent that in my art. He stands in front of the earth as if he is the one controlling it, which in some ways he is.

The Eye of the Catnip

Abigail Toviah,

Acrylic & Oil Paint, 2025

The Eye of the Catnip is a commentary on how drugs influence society in our modern day. I choose this little friend, the cat, to find a unique way to represent drug use in our society. Curiosity is a well-known fact about cats, which is similar to a youthful teen. Teens are influenced by outside sources like friends, family, social media, and social expectations that can be overwhelming for anyone even more so for a teenager, so they resort to drugs. Though getting into drugs because of pressure and to escape is common in society, many try drugs because they are just curious. A rainbow often symbolizes peace and positive energy, which is a similar feeling when getting high. That’s why I chose a rainbow to paint the cat. While being high the outside world seems to fade out and all one can feel is the good feeling that the drug is creating, which I represent in the background with the color black.

My Rock Star, Red Rabbit

Abigail Toviah

Color Pencil, 2025

I chose to draw Junhan from Xdinary Heroes. Xdinary Heroes is a Korean rock band with six members. Junhan is the second youngest, and he is also the main guitarist. For this art project, I drew him because he is an inspiration to me. After all, he is shy like me. He is confident in who he is, and that means a lot to me. He makes me feel like it’s okay to be shy and quiet because if he can do it and be confident, I can do it too. He is also so talented and so is everyone in his band. He wrote a song about how it was hard for him to open up to his other members and to others, which I can relate to. It’s called Dear H., meaning Dear Hope, for other people who feel the same way as him, and that he can find hope that he will be okay if he opens up to these members.
